Devon League Division ‘A’ 1st -Braunton v. Cornwood - XI Saturday 2nd May 2009
Cornwood won the toss and elected to field.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Braunton made a stumbling start with Mark Lathwell departing with the score on 1. Aussie Matt Harivel joined James Windsor at the wicket and put on 83 for the second wicket. When Harivel (41) went, Windsor added 43 with Andy Paddison (35), before he was stumped on 41. Wickets tumbled in the last 10 overs as Braunton tried to up the tempo and managed to reach 200 in the last over.
Cornwood were never allowed to get their innings going with some good bowling early on from Barney Huxtable (2-25) and Jon Baglow (2-24). At 23-3 it was always going to be difficult to get anywhere near the target. Tom Popham bowled well on his ‘A ‘ Division debut, and with Lathwell and Paddison working well together in the middle of the innings, it was a matter of when rather than if Cornwood would be bowled out. In amongst his 14 overs, Lathwell bowled a spell of 4 overs 2-0. Braunton left it late with 3 wickets coming in the last 6 overs, the final wicket being taken by Lathwell with 8 balls remaining.
The win means 20 points for Braunton in what was a promising start. A good all round performance with the bat and in the field.
Youth Division Training
Please note this years Youth training starts this weekend on Monday 4th May at 6pm.
North Devon League Division 2
Game 2 - Braunton v. Hatherleigh
Saturday 18th April 2009, at the Kelsey Ground
Another glorious afternoon saw Hatherleigh visit the Kelsey Ground for the NDL Division 2 fixture. The ground is looking fantastic for this time of year and credit must go to those who have put in a lot of time and effort over the past couple of months. Great work.
After winning the toss, Braunton elected to bat. A decision that looked good from the start with an opening stand of 44 between Jimmy Windsor and Tom Popham (11), both playing some good shots against the new ball. Windsor followed his half century last week with 46 and is looking in good touch. The fall of the first wicket brought Ross Burbidge to the crease for his first innings with his new club. After a tentitive start he soon got into full flow, attacking anything short. Sharing a 5th wicket stand of 85 with Brady Saunders (30), Burbidge smashed a boundary to bring up his century, but fell the next ball for 101; well batted. Braunton completed their 45 overs on 241 for 6.
Hatherleigh started the chase brightly with G.Tiball at the top of the order, but when he fell for 64 just before the drinks break, the visitors never looked likely to threaten the target. Andy Paddison was the pick of the home bowlers with 3-16 off 6 overs. Jon Baglow started the innings off with 2-19 from 9. Also with wickets were Jack Spicer 2-36 and Mark Mitchell 1-13. Debutant Matt Harival, showed how it should be done with 2-18 in his first 4 over for the club. Hatherleigh were finally all out for 156.
Braunton - 241 for 6 (Burbidge 101, Windsor 46, Saunders 30, Mitcham 15*)
Hatherleigh - 156 all out (Paddison 3-16, Baglow 2-19, Harival 2-18, Spicer 2-36)
Senior Nets
Senior nets are now taking place on Tuesday evenings from 6pm at the club. Any new players welcome.
One for your diary…
Please remember the North Devon league games start next Sunday (12th April) with the 1st team at home to Barnstaple and Pilton.
Calling all young cricketers !
Spring is just around the corner. It may have been snowing outside but we know you are all thinking of those long hot summer days down at the Kelsey Ground.
Indoor training will start on Saturday March 7th at the Braunton Community College and continue for 4 weeks. As usual there will be 2 sessions on each day, both being taken by former England Test star Mark Lathwell.
The first session will run from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm and is for the Under 11 age group. (must be at least 8 years old)
The second session will be from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm and is for the 11 to 14 age group.
After the first week Mark will probably want to organise the following sessions based more on ability than age so don't be concerned that you have been moved to a different time slot. This is to ensure that you get the most out of the training. The cost for this training will be £5 per session or £15 for all 4 sessions.
Please could you let all of your friends know about this just incase we have missed them off the club mailing list.
SEE YOU ON THE 7th
News from the Kelsey ground is that Jon Baglow has been selected as the 2009 1st Team Captain for the forthcoming summer campaign.
Baggy, who opened the bowling last season, is a left-arm pace bowler and right hand batsman. He took 25 wickets at 17.6 for the Kelsey lads last season, for which he was awarded 'bowler of the year' at the 2008 season end presentations. Jon also contributed some handy lower order displays with the bat. Baglow's skills with both bat and ball means he has more than one string to his bow, and his experience and competitiveness made him the players first choice for Captain.
Paul Mitcham, Deputy Chairman of Braunton Cricket Club suggested Jon Baglow was a natural successor to Mark Lathwell who continues to play for the Kelseymen this season, and labelled Baglow a thoughtful and strategic leader. Mitcham also intimated that the club was in final negotiations to secure a quality overseas talent for the forthcoming season.
Baglow who is looking forward to the new season, said; "The A Division is going to be a very strong league this year and we will need to improve on last seasons performances if we are going to be competitive. We have some good players at the club and as a team we will be looking for more consistent displays. If we manage that, then there is no reason why we cannot have a brilliant year. On our day, I am sure we will be able to upset some of the fancied sides".
Braunton have already started training for the new season and welcome current and any new players to attend the sessions and to play for the club. Braunton currently field 2 Devon league teams on a Saturday and 2 North Devon league teams on a Sunday. If you are interested in attending the training sessions, they are taking place at Park School on Sunday's throughout February and March from 4pm to 6pm.

Catherine Mitcham Outdoes Her Elder Brother.
Barney Huxtable and Tom Mitcham were members of the Devon Under 15 team who finished runners up in the County Championship. They lost a very exciting final against Middlesex by only one run, a game they really should have won.
However Catherine's Devon Under 13 team went one better by beating Yorkshire in the final in Derby. So the bragging rites in the Mitcham household certainly lie with little sister!

Braunton Cricket Club Presentation Night - Saturday 22nd September 2007
One of of those festive club occasions when everyone was up for a great night and loads of banter. The presentation was a fluid affair and the deserved winners were warmly congratulated by the thronging masses of players, families and friends.
Suffice to say that the food was brilliant thanks to Barry & Jo, the sponsors had an early night for St Austell standards and local talent the 308's did their thing on the stage (aka skittle alley).
Barney Huxtable and Tom Mitcham our West of England Colts are over £600.00 better off following the successful draw proceeds towards their dream trip to South Africa next February. A big up to St Austell, 11 the Quay, Saunton Sands, SaltRock, Azzuri, Pauls Driving School, Travis Perkins, Hunter and Ticket Zone for the top quality prizes.
Please find below a few of the pictures taken by resident photog and one time googly specialist Johnny Martin aka the Lorry Spotter.

Mark "Mitch" Mitchell receives his award as 1st TEAM Player of the Year 2007 from John Foster, the area representative from club Title sponsors St Austell Brewery.

The 1st TEAM Player of the Year 2007 award was a shared affair and Colin Hack was honoured for his fantastic season long opening bowling performances.

John Foster presents Ian Roberts with his trophy for the Sunday 1st team Batsman of the year award.

Local driving instructor, Committee member and committed clubman Paul Mitcham cruised his way to take the Chairmans "Champagne Moment" for 2007. Did we mention he was Toms Dad!

William "Bill" Mitchell deservedly takes the accolade of the Social teams Bowler of the year, in the process making it a Mitchell family double.

Seen that one somewhere before? Leo Williams one time BCC player for 50 years and now esteemed Umpire of the Social team.

Devon girls played Oxfordshire on Saturday 21st at Killerton House. Devon were representing the South West region and Oxford the South, Devon having beaten Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset to reach this stage. Oxfordshire won the toss and choose too bat a decision they were soon to regret being bowled out for a meagre 46 runs. Devon now face Kent in the semi-final on the 4th August possibly at Blundels school. The winner of this game will play in the final at Taunton county ground on the 8th September.
News Flash 23nd July 2007

Please attend next week on the 30th July between 6pm -8pm.
Round up
Great weekend for Men of the Match Huxtable boys Alfie and big brother Barny both starred for Devon over the weekend. Alfie made his debut for the Under 10s at Millfield against Buckinghamshire. Bucks batted first and were going along nicely at 80 for2 when young Huxtable came on to bowl his leg spin. Five overs later Alfie finished his spell with the remarkable figures of :-
| Overs | Maidens | Runs | wickets |
| 5 | 1 | 9 | 5 |
Barney was also voted man of the match. So a good weekend for a very proud dad Kevin although his beloved Leeds United may well not exist come Monday.
Youth Division

Congratulations Catherine
Catherine Mitcham (daughter of BCC Committee Member Paul) has been selected to play for the Devon under 13 girls team, a reasonable feat in itself but the fact that she is only 11 years old and will be the youngest player in the squad makes it all the more remarkable.
Catherine started training on Monday nights at Braunton for the last couple of years and played for West Buckland school and Braunton last year. This year she was invited to North Devon girls training and represented them at both U13 & U15 in regional games at Paignton and was then asked to attend Devon training at Plymouth from were she has been selected into the Devon U13 Squad.
Catherine will be playing in the first round of cup matches on:-
29 May Cornwall Away
30 May Dorset Exmouth
16 June Somerset Away
If they get through that the regoinal play off will be at Killerton on 21st July. Then the national final will be at Taunton on 8th September 2007.
We extend her our congratulations and wish the team our very best for the forthcoming matches.
We are looking for a reliable, friendly and enthusiastic full time Bar Manager.
Essentially you will have previous experience and can work well within a team.
The role involves the day to day operations of the Clubhouse and Bar facilities.
Immediate start.

Sponsorship News
The Chairman and Executive Committee are delighted to announce that the long standing Title Sponsorship agreement the club have with St Austell Brewery has been renewed and improved.
St Austell Brewery (SAB) is an independent company founded in 1851 and are the South West's largest wholesaler of beers, wine, spirits and minerals. The strong relationship forged between the parties over the past decade has had a mutually positive benefit with St Austell recognising the need for investment in both the cricketing and the wet sales of the club.
The support extends to a package to prepare the club to deal with the element of challenge and 'uncertainty' as we join other countries in the 'Smoking Ban'.
Danny Crabb, Regional Sales Manager for St Austell, expressed his delight at the fact that the strategic partnership was a ' relationship opportunity to benefit the cricket club and the local community'.
Calling All Players
Are you one of those individuals with a passion for the game of cricket ? if so then this is a call to all players past, present and new to sign up for the 2007 season.
Irrespective of your age or ability, if you are feeling the pull to start afresh or resurrect your playing days, then do get in touch as we recruit throughout the season.
Braunton Cricket Club is first and foremost a sports club for sportsmen and women and we would welcome old, new, young and the not so young to join the ranks and feel included in the majesty that is the Kelsey ground.
WE would rather be over subscribed with players and have numbers in reserve than be short of talent.
Remember the season is not that long and travelling distances are not very great in the North Devon league, so come and feel part of something that is competitive on the wicket yet fun and social in the clubhouse.
If you believe your playing days are truly over, then why not join the club as a supporter with family and friends and take advantage of our facilities and fantastic venue to watch the matches over the summer.
Player of the Year
John Higgs was voted the Braunton Cricket Club Player of the Year at the annual prize giving held at the Kelsey ground HQ on Saturday 9th September 2006.
John has played his way through the junior ranks of Braunton CC and at 23 is one of the youngest players to be awarded this accolade.
A season full of energy and focus, always mixed with a smile often hiding his burning desire to win, saw John and his team mates manage to avoid relegation and maintain the status quo in the North Devon League.
The 1st team captained by Mark Lathwell consisted of a blend of well rounded old heads and a smattering of youthful exuberance, and no overseas players for the first time in years.
